Myths about allergy skin testing

1. Allergy skin testing is painful

Fact:   Prick-puncture testing, using a pediatric-friendly device like a Multi-tester is, at the worst, mildly uncomfortable.

2.   Allergy testing should not be done in children under the age of 3

Fact:  Skin testing, and in-vitro testing like RAST testing, can be reliably done at any age, if an IgE-mediated allergy is suspected. Serum IgE is present at birth, and specific IgE can be detected at any age.

3.  RAST testing is just as good as an allergist evaluation

Fact:  RAST (in-vitro specific IgE) testing has improved over time, but an evaluation by the 4 board certified allergist-immunologists at Allergy and Asthma Medical Group and Research Center comes with 100 years of collective experience and expertise in the clinical care of pediatric allergy-immunology patients.
